LEARN ABOUT BIOMASS

BriquetingWhat is Biomass? :
Biomass is fuel made of organic material (trees) and organic waste (such as sawdust, bark, etc, but also from things such as fruit-pits, hay/grass etc. )
The Biomass is produced in many different forms and has many different applications as well for industrial usage as for private/residential usage.
The most common usage is for heating.

Advantages Biomass in general :
The strongest advantage of biomass is it’s economic value. It is, compared to other fuels for heating, very cheap and annual heating-costs compared to oil-heating-systems can easily be halved.
The economic advantage comes from the very high value-to-energy-ratio of Biomass.
Because biomass has a highly efficient burning-process, and therefor has a very high thermodynamic value. Due to this highly efficient burning-process, biomass hardly emits any harmful substances such as CO2 for example.
Because biomass is made from organic material and has this highly efficient burning-process, it has a low ‘CO2-footprint’ or , in most cases, is totally CO2 - Neutral!

Another great advantage is the storage of your fuel. Pellets or Brikets are clean and convenient to store anywhere it suits you.
Also there are no dangerous gasses (diesel-vapor) which makes the product safer, and it has no bad smell, instead, you might smell the sweet and natural scent of the woods!
Biomass therefore, is not only very economic, it is also very ecologic!

Pellet vs Oil

Buying a biomass-burner. :
A pellet-burner (there are models that burn pellets as well as other products, varying from brikets/copped wood, to hay bales and even cokes. But for convenience we will refer to it as a “pellet-burner” ) is a machine that burns biomass to heat the house and the water.

The first step to cutting your heating cost will be to change the system that currently heats your house. (most probably oil)
To change the system one needs to purchase a pellet-burner that suits it’s needs. There many different manufacturers and it pays of to spend some time and effort comparing the different models to your needs and likings.
Important things to look at are :
What is the capacity of the pellet-burner?
Does it also provide hot water for the boiler?
What type of (other) products can it use, and just as important, which types of products are harmful?
How big is the ‘silo’ (for refill intervals)?

When the pellet-burners is purchased it can be connected to existing systems in the house, and this makes the change a relatively simple event, that can be done in one day.
Like oil-burners the pellet- burners are fully automated and require only little attention. You will still use the same trusted thermostat that you used before.
The placing of a ‘silo’ (storage-container) to store the biomass will not take more space than a regular oil-storage-container.

Resume
Biomass is :
Cheap (50% cheaper than oil)
Clean to store (no nasty smells, and/or dangerous vapors)
Clean to the environment (zero CO2 emissions)
Easy to use (same user-comfort as oil)
Simple to install. (it can be installed in 1 day, no hassle with craftsmen and mess around the house). Take care that a CERTIFIED CRAFTSMAN installs your pellet-burner to make certain a good and long lifespan of the machine, and a coverage from your insurance.
